Paul Smalera's Website Design Portfolio
This is a complete, chronological listing of sites I've worked on. There's no need to view every site, so I've included a key to indicate my greatest hits. In the rightmost column, a √ is indicative of a hallmark project. A † indicates the site still bears my design, even if some changes have been made. A lack of either symbol simply means that the site has been redesigned beyond my recognition.

Bank Information Center Blue Water Media Designer, Developer [For Blue Water Media, a small firm in Washington, DC, I was senior designer and sales engineer. I designed and built over a dozen sites, and worked on a dozen others not listed here.]

Bank Information Center was a project intended to build up the firm's capability to provide CMS systems. It's built on Movable Type. All templates and some plugins were custom designed. The site has syndication features to allow partners to pick up feeds. It was designed to be managed by non-technical staff and to have semantic web and categorization capabilities. The underlying structure allows BIC to archive old data and add new data to one, central database, for both web and internal use.

B2B Portal Accenture subcontractor Database Engineer Using Microsoft SQL Server, I helped create a package of Data Transformation Services (DTS) components to import huge flat data files into SQL databases. Deptartment. of Education Accenture subcontractor Front-end Designer I designed a beautiful, elegant front-end to a complicated online portal for the Dept. of Ed. Unfortunately the developers implemented my design and only crumbs of it survived. I include this example to indicate how important I feel it is for developers to understand what good design is. I was extremely careful to design to exact specifications, but the design was not important enough to the developers to implement properly.
DC Office of Personnel LC Systems subcontractor Webmaster Followed DC CTO's thorough style guide in maintaining and updating the site. Worked with an Oracle DB which held the District's job openings database and personnel files.
Online Rsources, Inc. Online Resources, Inc. Web Marketing Specialist Online Resources provides online banking services to small banks and credit unions I updated our main site, and worked in a team to build a design websites for small banks that were about to start offering our services to their customers. I did a lot of collateral and logo design, mini-sites for kiosks that banks used to introduce online banking to their customers. (This was pretty new bank in 2000.) I also helped redesign the user interface for a huge business banking product we had bought. The work is not available to the public, but was my first introduction to the challenges of, and careful planning that good web design requires.
Quotien Marketing Services Online Resources, Inc. Web Marketing Specialist Eventually Online Resources decided to formalize their offerings to clients under a brand name, Quotien. Quotien Marketing Services was a site built to highlight and capture consulting business. I helped design and build the site, and also helped the Art Director with some of the collateral he designed. We're really starting to reach back here. √ †
Gainesville Times,Port Clinton News Herald,The News-Messenger,Pacific Daily News Gannett, Co., Inc. Website Producer At Gannett, I was part of a team that built the first generation of websites for their small-market newspapers. (Larger markets justified their own on-site teams.) These 4 papers were my main projects out of 18 papers total. I worked with the publishers and editors to customize our standard template to fit each newspaper's look and feel. I learned ColdFusion and heavy duty coding and all sorts of other neat little tricks I still use today. Once the sites were built, I also helped with the nightly updates, taking Quark files and a story budget and crafting the next day's website while the denizens of these small towns slept, unaware I was working on their behalves.
Kids' Newsroom TopCentre, Inc. Designer This is the second site I ever designed. Everyone has to start somewhere. The founders loved my crude logo and idea for the slogan. I'm amazed that the site is still around. Whatever its aesthetics now, I was excited back when it launched in 1999.   †
Top Centre Ticket Brokers TopCentre, Inc. Designer My first web design job. I talked my way into it, in late 1998. I broke the site on my first day, and learned alot about the web as I tried to fix it. My major achievement was taking the site out of frames.
